About the NZ Resuscitation Council (NZRC) – CORE Advanced Course

CORE Advanced is the New Zealand Resuscitation Council’s Level 5 resuscitation course for experienced health and dental professionals who are expected to lead or manage resuscitation events in their clinical practice. 

The course is endorsed by the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) and the Royal New Zealand College of Urgent Care (RNZCUC). 

This course is suitable for: 

  • Experienced registered nurses and midwives
  • Anaesthetic technicians
  • General practitioners (GPs)
  • Dentists providing sedation
  • Paramedics and intensive care paramedics
  • Senior nursing staff working in high-acuity areas
  • Registrars, specialists and trainee interns
  • Other experienced clinicians responsible for managing resuscitation events 

Course Format

CORE Advanced combines comprehensive pre-course study with a full-day practical programme. 

Participants must complete the required pre-reading before attending the practical session, which runs for approximately 8 hours and concludes with a written assessment. 

The course includes: 

  • Practical resuscitation skills
  • Simulated cardiac arrest and medical emergency scenarios
  • Initial trauma management
  • Recognition and management of medical emergencies
  • Awareness of intraosseous (IO) access
  • ECG recognition and interpretation
  • Manual defibrillation
  • Waveform capnography (where applicable)
  • Anaphylaxis management, including the use of adrenaline (for authorised practitioners)
  • Multiple-choice written assessment 

Please note that CORE courses require a minimum of 4 participants. Should we not have 4 participants enrolled on the course, we will need to reschedule. This will be communicated to participants at least one week prior to the course date.

Pre-Course Requirements

Participants are required to complete pre-course reading using the NZRC reference text: NZRC Resuscitation – A Guide for Advanced Rescuers 

This manual should be obtained and studied at least three weeks before the course to ensure participants are adequately prepared for the practical and assessment components.  The resource book is available purchase from , or we can arrange the purchase or hire of the resource book. 

Entry Requirements

CORE Advanced is intended for qualified clinicians who are expected to lead or manage resuscitation events as part of their professional role.  Participants must hold a recognised clinical qualification to enrol in this course.

Minimum Participant Numbers

CORE courses require a minimum of four participants to proceed. If minimum numbers are not reached, the course will be rescheduled. Participants will be notified as early as possible should this occur.
